A Brief History of the Rubik's Cube

For players curious where the puzzle actually came from.

An engineering problem, not a puzzle

In early 1974, Ernő Rubik was a 29-year-old lecturer in interior design at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest, Hungary. He wasn't setting out to invent a puzzle — he was trying to solve a structural problem: how to let the small blocks of a cube move independently, layer by layer, without the entire object falling apart. Working with wood, rubber bands and paper clips in his mother's flat, he built a mechanism where each layer of a 3×3×3 cube could rotate freely on its own.

Only after he'd built it and scrambled the colours did he realise he'd created a genuinely difficult puzzle — by his own account, it took him about a month to work out how to solve it again.

From "Magic Cube" to global phenomenon

Rubik patented his invention in 1975 under its original name, the Bűvös kocka — Hungarian for "Magic Cube." It went on sale in a Budapest toy shop in 1977, selling only regionally for a few years under Hungary's centrally planned economy. A Hungarian businessman eventually got a version out to Western toy fairs, and in 1979 a distribution deal was signed with the Ideal Toy Corporation. In 1980, it was rebranded for international audiences under the name it's known by today: the Rubik's Cube.

It became one of the best-selling toys in history — by 2018, cumulative sales were estimated at over 350 million cubes worldwide, and it's widely regarded as the best-selling puzzle toy of all time.

The rise of speedcubing

Competitive solving followed almost immediately — the first World Rubik's Cube Championship was held in Budapest in 1982. The scene went quiet through most of the 1980s and 90s before resurging in the 2000s, driven partly by the internet making solving methods and technique easy to share. The World Cube Association, the sport's governing body, was founded in 2004 and now sanctions competitions worldwide.

Modern speedcubes bear little resemblance to Rubik's original mechanism — today's competition cubes use magnetic positioning and engineered internals purpose-built for speed. The current record holders reflect just how far the sport has come: as of 2026, the fastest single solve on record is 2.76 seconds, set by Teodor Zajder, and the fastest average of five solves is 3.51 seconds, set by Yiheng Wang. Records like these are broken often, so treat any specific number as a snapshot rather than the final word.

Why it still holds up

Part of what's kept the Rubik's Cube relevant for five decades is the same thing Rubik stumbled onto by accident: the mechanism itself is elegant, and the puzzle it produces scales from "a fun distraction" to "a competitive sport measured in tenths of a second," depending entirely on how far you want to take it. TwistyCube's Number and Sudoku modes are a small nod to that same idea — different rule sets, same underlying structure.
